I was out very late on the Carnegie candlelight vigil tonight.I did not get home until 11.45 and am absolutely shattered. It was an absolutely astounding experience. At 6.30pm when I arrived, not knowing what I would find, people were still keeping the library open, walking freely in and out. When Council consiglieres turned up to padlock the doors of the 110 year old library shut, users refused to leave and announced the occupation of the library. They took possession of their own and I have never been prouder. We had speeches and songs inside and out, then received the news that the police had been summoned,:library staff had called to say they felt threatened. In order to stop the police from coming in, library staff were forced to leave. We had been enjoying ourselves very much drinking squash and eating snacks and hearing speeches and singing.
